Mars Hill

In the days following Hurricane Helene, herbalists and small business owners in Madison County began checking on one another and asking: What can we do to be of service to our community? Because Mars Hill had accessible roads, restored services, and usable spaces, it became an important resource for surrounding communities affected by the storm. The location soon grew into a relief distribution site and herbal mutual aid hub, offering free herbal clinics, an herbal pantry, donated medicine, and community medicine making. From this response, something lasting took root.

Where We Are Now

The herbalists who organized the response formed MadCo Herbal Collective, an independent community herbal collective serving Madison County. The collective has since moved its work from Mars Hill to Marshall, North Carolina, continuing to offer free herbal care, community medicine making, volunteer opportunities, and mutual aid. MadCo Herbal Collective is an example of how emergency response can grow into lasting relationships, community infrastructure, and ongoing care.

MadCo Herbalist Collective was co-created by three local businesswomen and mothers with decades of combined herbal practice; backgrounds in teaching, cooperative business, and earth skills work; non-profit & board experience; and overall badassery.
